WINNR vs Canopy (2026): Canopy Review and Comparison
WINNR vs Canopy, checked October 2026. Canopy prices, store ratings, how its VPN filter handles your data, and who should pick which.
Prices, ratings and privacy details checked 25 October 2026.
The short answer: Canopy is a filter; WINNR is a habit-change app. Canopy runs a VPN on your device, inspects every page and image before it loads, and blurs what it judges explicit. If you are a parent protecting a child's phone, pick Canopy, not WINNR. If you are an adult who wants a wall on every device, including your laptop, Canopy is the stronger wall today. WINNR is for men aged 15 to 35 who want to change the habit itself, and it is not in the app stores until December 2026.
WINNR publishes this comparison. We have tried to be fair; every claim about Canopy links to its source, and we apply the same privacy, pricing and evidence questions to ourselves as to Canopy.

Canopy review: what it is and how it works
Who makes it
Canopy is sold by Netspark, Inc., listed on Google Play at 539 W Commerce St, Dallas, Texas, and on the App Store. Its about page and terms of service returned errors on 25 October 2026, so current leadership, governing law and refund wording are not covered here.
How it works
Canopy is two apps. The Canopy app controls the settings; Canopy Shield goes on each device being filtered. The Shield listing on Google Play explains its permissions: a VPN that routes content through the developer's remote servers so it can be filtered before it reaches the device, accessibility services, usage access, block screens drawn over other apps, and optional device-administrator rights for uninstall protection. On iPhone, a Canopy support article says Shield needs an MDM (device management) profile; a device can hold only one such profile and one VPN at a time.
Key features, from Canopy's own pages:
- Real-time filtering. The technology page says the filter scans pages and images as they load and replaces explicit images with white rectangles rather than blocking the whole site. The adults page adds that known porn domains are blocked outright.
- Sexting prevention. On Android, a photo the filter flags is held until a parent reviews it; on iPhone this works as camera-roll alerts.
- Removal prevention. Attempts to uninstall Shield or lower protection notify the controlling account.
- Ally, for adults. The Ally page offers a human Ally, someone you invite who approves or denies your setting changes by email, or an AI Ally, included with every plan, which decides based on goals you set during setup. Removing the AI Ally is a conversation, not a toggle.
- App and website blocking, downtime, location alerts, social-media controls. Listed on the homepage.
Platforms, per the pricing page: Android 12, iOS 12, macOS 10.13 and Windows 10 or later, plus Chromebooks. English and Hebrew.
What Canopy says about itself
The homepage claims "over 200K protected families", a patented technology (no patent number) and, on its own reviews round-up, 99.8 percent detection accuracy with no method published. The adults page FAQ says Canopy "isn't therapy, and it isn't a cure". The same test applies to WINNR, which has no user count or accuracy figure to publish.
Canopy pricing, free trial and ratings (as of October 2026)
Canopy publishes prices on its pricing page, in US dollars, as a monthly figure billed annually; the App Store adds true monthly plans.
| Devices | Website, yearly (US dollars) | App Store, monthly | App Store, yearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Essential) | 8.33 a month, 99.96 a year | 9.99 | 99.99 |
| 3 (Plus) | 9.99 a month, 119.88 a year | 15.99 | 119.99 |
| 5 | Not offered | 14.99 | 119.99 |
| 10 (Premium, "unlimited" with a 10-device footnote) | 12.50 a month, 150 a year | 19.99 | 149.99 |
Sources: canopy.us/pricing and the App Store listing, checked 25 October 2026; yearly website totals are our multiplication. Every plan starts with a 7-day trial, there is a 30-day money-back guarantee from account creation, and deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.
Store ratings, checked 25 October 2026:
- App Store (US): 3.8 stars from 1,635 ratings, per the Apple lookup API. Age rating 4+; updated 25 May 2026.
- Google Play, Canopy parent app: 3.7 stars from about 1,480 reviews, 100K+ downloads, updated 27 August 2026 (listing).
- Google Play, Canopy Shield: 2.3 stars from 268 reviews, 50K+ downloads, updated 30 August 2026 (listing).
- Trustpilot: 1.9 out of 5 from 31 reviews, 71 percent one-star.
WINNR, for the same test: 9 euro a month or 49 euro a year, published on winnr.now; the first 100 waiting-list members pay 29 euro for the first year. No free tier. No store ratings until the app launches in December 2026.
Privacy and data
With a habit-change app, the sensitive thing is what you type. With a filter, it is what you load: every page and image passes through it. Same five questions for both.
Canopy
What is collected. The privacy policy (last updated September 2025) lists account data, device data, the apps installed on the device, log files including IP address, requested URLs, clicked pages and filtering actions, cookies and Google Analytics, and location if enabled. Content "including pictures" may be collected if you expressly agree. The technology page says Canopy does not scan emails, texts, calls or live video, does not sell data, and does not "keep any user data permanently". The policy does not say whether images are analysed on the device or on Canopy's servers; the Shield listing says traffic is routed through the developer's remote servers, and its Play data-safety summary says app activity is shared with third parties.
Who can see it. Affiliates and subsidiaries (including foreign ones), service providers, the Ally feature, authorities when legally required, and any acquirer in a sale. Anonymous information may go to advertisers. The Ally page says the AI Ally works without sharing your browsing history, and a human partner receives limited, high-level alerts.
Where it is stored. Not stated. No country or hosting provider is named, and the policy does not mention GDPR.
Retention and deletion. No retention period and no deletion process are described; both Google Play listings say you can request deletion. No data protection officer is named.
Reported incident. None found on 25 October 2026, a negative we could not fully verify.
WINNR
What is collected. The privacy notice (updated 4 July 2026, marked as pending formal legal review) lists your email, a display handle, subscription status and a Stripe customer reference; and, as special-category data, your questionnaire answers, goals, urge events, counter history, journal entries, community posts, partner messages and AI coach messages. No card details are stored; the website uses no cookies or IP logging. Browsing history and images are not on the list: WINNR's blocker is not a VPN.
Who can see it. Supabase (database and sign-in, AWS Stockholm), Hetzner (hosting, Germany), Brevo (email, France), Stripe (payments, US and Ireland), Google (only if you choose Google sign-in). If you opt in to the AI coach, your coach messages are processed by OpenRouter with a DeepSeek model in the United States, under zero-retention terms and standard contractual clauses. You can use WINNR without the coach.
Where it is stored. EU servers, with the AI coach exception above.
Retention and deletion. Kept while your account is open; unused accounts are deleted after 12 months; payment records are kept seven years under Dutch tax law. You can delete everything from Settings, actioned immediately, and export your coach data. No DPO yet; Chino.io is to be appointed at launch.
Reported incident. None. WINNR has not launched, so this is a policy, not a track record.
Who is behind it
Canopy
Netspark, Inc., United States, with a Dallas, Texas address on both Google Play listings; the privacy policy calls it Netspark Inc. "doing business in the United States as Canopy". The filter comes from Netspark, an Israeli company; a June 2021 article in the Daily Citizen reported that it was first built for Orthodox Jewish communities, that Canopy soft-launched in the US in March 2021, and named Sean Clifford as CEO at the time. Because the about page did not load, we cannot confirm who runs it in 2026 or how it is funded. Support is by phone and email, per the pricing page.
WINNR
WINNR is made by Stichting Extraordinary Life (KvK 75069385), a Dutch foundation in Rotterdam. The founder is NJ (Nicolaas van Disseldorp), a coach and researcher. The team of six includes a CTO, a founding engineer, a lead writer with a background in work and organisational psychology, and two practical-interventions consultants, one of whom previously built group-therapy protocols at a treatment centre. Bios are at winnr.now/about.html. WINNR won Impacthon (PLNT, Leiden) in September 2026. Contact is winnr.now@gmail.com.
What real users say about Canopy
We read recent reviews on the App Store, both Google Play listings and Trustpilot on 25 October 2026. These are paraphrased themes, not quotes. Most reviewers are parents; we have marked the adults filtering their own device. Apple's review feed was blocked for us, so the App Store sample is mostly 2023 to 2024.
Recurring praise
- The filter catches a lot. An adult App Store reviewer in May 2024 said it blocked adult content well and kept it despite the side effects below. A September 2024 App Store parent said it blocked far more than her previous app.
- Independent testers rate it mid-table; impulsec gave 3.3 out of 5 on 23 October 2026.
Recurring complaints
- Over-blocking and breakage. The May 2024 adult reported harmless sites and streaming apps breaking. A February 2026 Play reviewer uninstalled after ten months because Canopy blocked phone updates and a work app; August 2026 Shield reviewers reported shopping and banking apps becoming unusable.
- Bypassed or missed. A September 2024 App Store reviewer, an adult filtering himself, found a way around it within weeks. A September 2026 Play reviewer said certain YouTube channels got through.
- Battery and speed. App Store reviewers in March 2023 and September 2024 reported heavy battery and data use from the VPN; Trustpilot and Play reviewers from July to September 2026 reported slow devices.
- Billing and support. A November 2024 App Store reviewer was double-charged at sign-up; a July 2026 Play reviewer was charged after cancelling within the trial; July 2026 Play and June 2026 Trustpilot reviewers described support escalations that went nowhere.
- The Ally. A September 2026 Play reviewer enabled it by mistake, found it intrusive, and had to talk his way out of it. For someone who wants a strict wall, that is the feature working.
Head-to-head
| Feature | WINNR | Canopy |
|---|---|---|
| Progress tracking | Counter keeps your full history after a slip | None |
| Urge help in the moment | Urge timer with short coping steps | None; it blocks, it does not coach |
| AI support | AI coach built on ACT and CBT, opt-in, not a therapist | AI Ally that approves or denies setting changes |
| Human support | Matched partner; psychologist and coach sessions in development | Human Ally by email; phone support staff |
| Blocker | Classic blocker ready; social-media blur in development | Real-time image filter via VPN, app blocking, downtime, removal prevention |
| Works on laptop | No | Windows, macOS, ChromeOS |
| Education and community | Lessons ready, videos in development; anonymous community | None |
| Platforms | iOS and Android from December 2026 | iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, ChromeOS |
| Data location | EU, with opt-in US processing for the AI coach | Not stated; traffic filtered through the company's servers |
Canopy wins every row about blocking, WINNR every row about what you do when the block is not there. A filter is strongest on a device someone else controls; for a man who holds his own passcode, the question is what happens the day he turns it off, and that day is what WINNR is built for.
What the research says
Be careful with every company's claims, ours included. A 2022 content analysis in JMIR Formative Research reviewed 170 apps for problematic pornography use and found that none cited direct evidence of effectiveness or safety. Canopy cites no study of its filter's effect on behaviour; its 99.8 percent figure is a detection claim, not an outcome. The same applies to WINNR, whose science page says so: the evidence concerns the methods WINNR uses, nobody has yet checked whether WINNR itself works, and a controlled study is planned after launch.
The methods WINNR builds on are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy with CBT elements, self-monitoring with goal setting and feedback, and if-then plans; the screener is the PPCS-6 (Bothe and colleagues, 2020). The team also draws on the Dual Control Model of sexual response (Bancroft and Janssen), which describes arousal as a balance between excitation and inhibition, as a model to design around rather than as proof that WINNR works. Canopy's model is simpler: keep the content off the screen.
Neither app is therapy, and both say so. If porn use is seriously hurting your life, add a licensed therapist to either.
When WINNR is the better choice
- You control your own phone, and you have learned that a filter you can switch off is a filter you will switch off.
- You want a counter that keeps your history after a slip, an urge timer, and a matched partner.
- You want a path to a real psychologist at a price a student can pay.
- You want your data on EU servers, a delete button that works immediately, and no VPN between your phone and the internet.
- You can wait until December 2026.
When Canopy is the better choice
- You are a parent protecting a child's device. Canopy is built for this; WINNR is not, and should not be installed on a child's phone as a control tool.
- You want explicit images removed from every page in real time, on a laptop as well as a phone, with someone else holding the keys.
- You need something tonight.
- You already have a counsellor or a group and want a filter alongside. Covenant Eyes is the other well-known option in that lane, built around activity reports to a partner; Canopy's adult mode filters without reports.
How to switch from Canopy, or use both
If you are an adult moving from Canopy to WINNR
- Join the WINNR waiting list at winnr.now by taking the free 4-minute check.
- Decide what replaces the wall. Until December, keep a blocker. Screen Time's adult-site limit on iPhone and Private DNS on Android are free; our guide to the best porn blocker apps covers the rest.
- Cancel Canopy at the source. In the web dashboard, or in your Apple or Google subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel billing.
- Remove your Ally, then Shield. An AI Ally is removed through a conversation in the app. Then uninstall Shield from each device, and on iPhone remove the Canopy MDM profile.
- Ask for deletion in writing. Email help@canopy.us and ask for confirmation; no retention period is published.
If you are a parent
Keep Canopy. Nothing here is a reason to take a filter off a child's device. If your son is 15 or older and asks for help with his own habit, WINNR becomes relevant as something he chooses, not something you install.
If you want to use both
Canopy as the filter on every device, including the laptop; WINNR for the counter, the urge timer, the partner and the psychologist sessions once they open. Leave WINNR's own blocker off while Canopy runs.
Key takeaways
- Canopy is a live, cross-platform filter from Netspark, Inc. (Dallas, Texas) that uses a VPN to blur explicit images in real time, for 99.96 to 150 US dollars a year after a 7-day trial.
- Its ratings are mixed: 3.8 on the App Store, 3.7 on Google Play for the parent app, 2.3 for Shield, 1.9 on Trustpilot. Praise centres on how much it catches; complaints on breakage, bypasses and billing.
- Canopy's privacy policy names no storage location, retention period or deletion process, and the filter routes your traffic through the company's servers.
- WINNR costs 9 euro a month or 49 euro a year, keeps data in the EU except for opt-in AI coach messages, keeps your history after a slip, and runs no VPN. It is not in the stores until December 2026, has no desktop app, and has no outcome data.
- Parent protecting a child: Canopy. Adult who wants the strongest wall: Canopy. Adult who wants to change the habit rather than only block it: WINNR, from December.
FAQ
Is Canopy free?
No. Canopy has a 7-day free trial, then a paid plan. As of October 2026 the website charges 8.33, 9.99 or 12.50 US dollars a month billed annually (99.96 to 150 dollars a year) for one, three or up to ten devices; the App Store also sells monthly plans from 9.99 dollars.
Does Canopy block porn?
Yes, that is its main job. It filters pages and images in real time through a VPN (Android) or a device-management profile (iPhone) and blurs explicit images rather than blocking whole sites. Reviewers say it catches a lot, sometimes breaks normal apps, and can be worked around by a determined adult.
Is Canopy worth it?
For a parent who wants a real-time image filter on a child's devices, most testers say yes, with weaker iPhone coverage and some slowdown as trade-offs. For an adult using it on himself, the value depends on whether someone else holds the Ally role.
Is my data safe with Canopy?
Canopy says it does not sell data or keep it permanently. Its policy names no storage location or retention period and does not mention GDPR. Because the product routes your traffic through Canopy's servers, you are trusting the company with everything you load. We found no reported incident.
Is WINNR better than Canopy?
They do different jobs. Canopy blocks; WINNR helps you change the habit, with a blocker as one small piece. Today Canopy is the only one you can download. From December 2026, WINNR offers EU data storage, a counter that does not reset after a slip, a matched partner and a path to psychologists at 49 euro a year. Neither has published evidence that it works.
Can I use WINNR and Canopy together?
Yes, and for an adult that may be the strongest set-up: Canopy as the wall, WINNR for what you do when an urge hits and for the human support.
