What is gooning? Meaning, risks and how to stop

A word that went from meme to search box. Here is what it means, when it matters, and what to do if you want to stop.

In short

Gooning means very long edging sessions with porn. It becomes a problem when sessions run longer than you intend, become your main way to cope, or cost you sleep, work or people. The steps to stop are the same as for any porn habit.

What gooning means

Gooning means very long sessions of edging with porn: staying close to orgasm for a long time instead of finishing, often for hours. The word has spread fast on Reddit and TikTok in the last few years, and many people first meet it as a joke or a meme before they know what it means.

Why the word spread

Part of it is internet humour. Part of it is that it named something some men recognised in themselves: sessions that start as "just a few minutes" and take the whole evening. A word that makes a pattern visible can be useful, as long as it does not turn into a badge or an identity.

When it becomes a problem

There is almost no research on gooning itself. What researchers do study is loss of control over sexual behaviour. The signs that matter are the same:

  • Sessions longer than you intended, again and again.
  • It is your main way to cope with stress, boredom, loneliness or low mood.
  • It costs you something: sleep, work, money, plans, people.
  • Irritability or restlessness when you try to cut back.
  • You have tried to stop and keep going back.

The World Health Organization describes compulsive sexual behaviour disorder as a pattern like this lasting six months or more and causing real harm 1. Only a professional can say whether that applies to you. Feeling guilty about it is not, on its own, a sign of a disorder.

What it can do to sex and daily life

Hours-long sessions take time from sleep, work and people, and that is often the first cost men notice. On sexual function the evidence is mixed: one large study found little link between how much porn younger men watched and erection problems 2, while some men report that long edging habits make sex with a partner feel less satisfying. If you notice problems with erections or orgasm, a doctor can help rule out other causes.

How to stop gooning

  1. Notice the pattern. When does a session start? Late at night, alone, after a bad day? Write down two or three repeats.
  2. Make one if-then plan for your riskiest moment: "When it is past 11 and I am alone, I put my phone in another room." Plans in this shape help people reach goals 3.
  3. Add friction. A blocker, no devices in bed, a set time when screens go off.
  4. Let urges pass. Leave the room, breathe out longer than in, name the feeling. The urge page walks you through it.
  5. Answer the need underneath. If it is stress, loneliness or boredom, find one other thing that answers it.
  6. Tell someone, and treat a slip as information, not as proof you have failed.

Is gooning a sin or haram?

Many people ask whether gooning is a sin or haram. We are not a religious organisation. If your faith matters to you, that is a legitimate reason to want to stop, and the methods on this page work regardless of why you start.

Common questions

What does gooning mean?

Gooning means very long sessions of edging with porn, often for hours. The word spread on Reddit and TikTok in recent years.

Is gooning bad for you?

Not every session is harmful, but it becomes a problem when sessions run longer than you intend, become your main way to cope, or cost you sleep, work or relationships.

Is gooning bad for your health?

There is almost no research on gooning itself. The clearest costs are lost sleep and time. Evidence on sexual function is mixed, so see a doctor if you notice problems.

How do I stop gooning?

Notice when sessions start, make an if-then plan for that moment, add friction such as a blocker, let urges pass instead of fighting them, and tell someone. Treat a slip as information.

Is gooning everyday bad?

If it happens every day and you would rather it did not, or it is costing you something, that is a sign it has more control than you want it to have.

Is gooning addictive?

Researchers do not use the word addiction for this. What they look at is loss of control over sexual behaviour. Long sessions you cannot stop, despite wanting to, are a sign worth taking seriously.
